Aldan-Pierce to remain with MVA board
The nomination of DFS Galleria president Marian Aldan Pierce to serve as a member of the Marianas Public Lands Trust has been recalled.
Pierce, who has been sitting on the Marianas Visitors Authority board of directors for several years, said her appointment to the Trust was withdrawn because MVA’s enabling legislation does not allow a board member to sit on any other government board.
Pierce has only been reappointed to the MVA board. She has three and a half years left in her term of office.
“I just got confirmed last year,” she said.
Three other nominations to the MPLT board were confirmed by the Senate last week.
Gregoria F. Omar, Alvaro Santos, and John Untalan will serve as trustees for six years. They join Vianny Hocog, the only member who remains from the previous composition of the MPLT board. Hocog represents Rota.
The MPLT is one of the autonomous agencies criticized for paying huge compensation to board members.
MVA board members, on the other hand, do not receive compensation for participating in meetings, although they are paid for actual expenses incurred.
The Senate, which was set to meet in Rota yesterday, is expected to confirm two new MVA board members: Tan Holdings Corp. president Jerry Tan, who will represent the business sector, and DFS Galleria manager Emma Villagomez, who will represent the women sector. (Agnes E. Donato)
