The Basketball Association of the Northern Mariana Islands is looking to host a women’s cage league, while the first cut for the CNMI Women’s National Team will be made early next month, according to BANMI vice president Elias Rangamar.

During an interview yesterday, Rangamar said organizers of the BANMI Women’s Basketball League have set a tentative opening date for the league, which will be on April 8.

He also disclosed that all interested teams must have a representative present during an important meeting on March 28 at 6:30pm at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium conference room.

Unlike other leagues, no entry fee will be required for teams, as Rangamar cited that the main purpose of hosting the league is to promote women’s basketball in the Commonwealth.

He added that about six or seven teams might suit up for action, among those being the Garapan Rollers, Toyota, and a team coached by BANMI president Mike Muna. Rangamar, who will also coach a team in the league, said all interested teams should contact him or co-coordinator George Cruz for more information. Games will be played on the weekends.

Rangamar, who also coaches the CNMI National Women’s Team that will be competing in the upcoming 6th Micronesian Games, said the team would not compete in the league as members will be spread out as part of other teams.

“The players in the national team will play together when we hold tournaments in the near future,” he said during an earlier interview. “With this league, we’re basically promoting women’s basketball and everyone has a chance to learn the game, enhance their skills, and get some experience.”

Rangamar said he would make his first cut on April 1, decreasing the numbers of players from 21 to 15. Players who are cut, though, can still take part in practices to enhance their skills.
