A number of public school principals have allegedly literally trashed Board of Education teacher representative Ambrose M. Bennett’s letter for them to back his tenure proposal to the board.

Bennett said that, although some principals have been very cooperative and distributed his letter to the teachers, some principals have discarded his letter and threw them into the garbage bin.

“I have talked with some teachers and they informed me that they never got the letter of notification nor were they informed about it,” said Bennett.

He said those principals who trashed his letters are leaving their teachers in the dark, which is not a first time.

“I won’t mention names but I do know who they are, and that makes it so difficult for teachers and me is the fact that the Commissioner [Rita H. Inos] will not instruct the principals to cooperate and inform their teachers,” he said.

Bennett said the letter he distributed to public teachers late last week merely asks for them to provide input to the tenure proposal that has already been presented to the BOE a long time ago.

The proposal was composed of a “justification and request” for the “concept” of tenure or permanent contracts to be approved or denied by the board. Bennett said the actual components of the tenure plan would need to be worked out should the board decide to accept the idea.

“Needless to say, your [teachers’] input or lack of input will have a significant impact on the decision of the board,” Bennett said.

The teachers are encouraged to forward their input and concerns to the CNMI State Board of Education through Bennett.

The teacher representative added that the Fiscal-Personnel and Administration Committee will be meeting to discuss the Tenure Proposal in the near future and these comments would be needed as part of their deliberations.

“I am strongly encouraging all PSS teachers and staff to take this ‘one time’ opportunity to express their concerns on tenure before a final vote is taken by the board,” he said.

Teachers can reach Bennett through 237-3835 for more comments and information.
