Good news to people who suffer from eye problems.

The Marianas Eye Institute is now offering advance technology to diagnose a wide range of eye care symptoms.

MEI chief executive officer Russ Quinn announced yesterday that Marianas Eye Institute is now using a more innovative scanning system called “Stratus OCT” to produce highly detailed images of the retina, the innermost layer of the interior of the eye.

“Stratus OCT is the first and only instrument that can ‘see’ below the surface of the retina to examine the retinal layers,” said Quinn.

Resident ophthalmologist Dr. Mark Robertson said the device is an important advancement that will provide real benefits to MEI patients.

°∞Stratus OCT enables us to clearly see the internal structures of the eye, so problems can be identified and treated in the best way possible. I would describe Stratus OCT as a powerful tool that helps us do more than ever before to protect a patient’s vision,°± he added.

Quinn said the breakthrough images of Stratus OCT provide detailed, CAT-scan like images of the structures affected by glaucoma and other abnormalities of the retina, including diabetic eye disease, detached retina, macular holes, age-related macular degeneration, and more.

Carl Zeiss Meditec is the manufacturer of the device.

The MEI CEO said the Stratus OCT never touches the eye, thus there’s no discomfort. It is also safe in that it requires only minutes to scan the eye.

This is the biggest breakthrough in eye care in over a decade, according to Robertson. “We are able to see things that we couldn’t see before, and more easily diagnose and treat a wide range of eye diseases.”

Marianas Eye Institute uses the eye scanning technology on a daily basis.

Robertson said the institute is very pleased to continue to provide advanced technologies to the people of the CNMI. “We recognize that technology leads many of the innovations in medicine, and we are committed to ensuring that the most up-to-date care is available to our islands.”

Quinn said the Stratus OCT eye scan exam at Marianas Eye Institute is covered by most insurance companies, including StayWell, PacifiCare, Netcare, Pacifica, Medicaid, Medicare, Tricare, Champus, Calvo’s, the government’s HPMR, and others.

Marianas Eye Institute also provides total eye care for the family, including express glasses, contact lenses, medical eye care, surgery and laser.

Marianas Eye Institute is staffed by Dr. David Khorram, who also has been listed in “America’s Top Ophthalmologists,” and Robertson, a magna cum laude graduate. MEI also boasts of its 12 other highly talented full-time employees.

MEI is located along Beach Road in Garapan, across 13 Fishermen’s Monument and is open Monday through Saturday. Quinn said the clinic accepts new patients as well as walk-ins. Anyone interested in seeing the Stratus OCT eye scan can call the clinic at 235-9090.
