Ex-senator unscathed in car mishap
A car turned turtle after it hit a vehicle being driven by former senator Juan C. Diaz along Monsignor Guerrero Road near the Yumul Building II in Chalan Kiya Saturday afternoon.
Diaz, 77, was not injured, but he complained that he “did not feel good” so he was transported by ambulance to the Commonwealth Health Center. The other driver, a 17-year-old boy, was injured and brought to CHC.
The accident happened about 4:50pm in front of Yu Ling Store and U.S.-CNMI Development Corp.
The Saipan Tribune learned from witnesses that the 17-year-old boy was driving a Toyota Camry with two teenaged female passengers. They were coming from Garapan and on their way home to Koblerville.
As the Toyota Camry was approaching the Yumul Building, a Ford Crown Victoria with license plate ACW-562 driven by Diaz crossed the highway coming from a dirt road on the opposite side of the highway.
Diaz, who was with his wife and two teenaged children, wanted to go back so he proceeded to the outer lane to turn to a narrow road in front of Yu Ling Store.
The Toyota Camry ended up striking the right front side of Diaz’s car. The Camry swerved to the shoulder of the road, then hit the gutter, causing it to overturn.
The impact caused Diaz’s car to spin, ending up facing San Jose.
The bloodied driver of the Toyota Camry slowly crawled outside from the vehicle. He then helped his two passengers crawl out from the wrecked car.
One of the passengers said she did not know what happened because she was busy with her cell phone.
“I just saw everything go black,” she said, crying. She and her co-passenger sat on the pavement and leaned on the fence of the U.S-CNMI Development Corp. while police officers talked to them. The two complained of body pains, but told responding emergency medical technicians that they were fine.
Medics first brought the injured driver to CHC. Later, Diaz was also transported to the hospital.
Police placed the incident under further investigation.
The scene is an accident-prone area.
