Black Magic is certainly heading in the right direction as the team currently leads the second game of their best-of-three semifinals series against defending champion Mwaliyas in the ongoing 2006 World Organized Rocball High School League.

Returning to the Marianas High School Gymnasium yesterday after stunning Mwaliyas with a Game 1 victory, Black Magic put up a strong second set performance to grab a slim lead, 29-27.

Game 2 was similar to the series opener as both team were neck and neck to open the match.

Shane Yamada was able to come through with smacks from the service area and Mwaliyas staged off a furious charge by Black Magic to take the first set, 15-13.

Mwaliyas tried to build on their momentum; however, despite Pedro Iguel connecting for a goal, their push was turned back in the second set as Dior Jones, J.J. Maliti, and the rest of the Black Magic crew were able to return the favor with a 16-12 victory.

With the win, Black Magic swung favor to their corner after two complete sets. Action resumes today at 11:30am as the two teams get the third set underway.

Iguel and Yamada currently lead the game’s individual scoring category with nine and eight points. Iguel has three kees and a goal, while Yamada has three aces and a kee.

Jones leads Black Magic with six points on an ace and two kees.

Mwaliyas must win the game to keep their hopes of returning to the finals alive. If the team wins, a do-or-die game will be played to determine the winner. If Black Magic wins, though, they will earn a slot to the finals against No. 2 Ochobu, which defeated Lagooners last week.

The two teams in the championship series will then battle in a best-of-five challenge for the title.
