Gov. Benigno R. Fitial has extended the state of emergency with respect to volcanic activity on the island of Anatahan.

Fitial said the volcanic activity and seismic phenomena that prompted the issuance of a declaration of emergency last January continues to exist on Anatahan.

The declaration states that Anatahan is unsafe for human habitation and all travel to the island are restricted except for those who will conduct scientific expeditions.

In his order issued Tuesday, Fitial said the state of disaster emergency in the CNMI with respect to Anatahan is extended “under the same terms and conditions as are contained in the original declaration.”

The extension, the governor said, shall remain in effect for 30 days, unless he notifies the Legislature that the emergency has been revoked or further extended.

Anatahan, a small volcanic island 120 km north of Saipan, is about nine km long and three km wide. It’s first historic eruption was reported in May 2003. In April 2004, the volcano woke up after a few months of slumber.
