PSS, NMC Proa rout bottom feeders
Public School System and Northern Marianas College Proa did their homework in the 2006 Inter-Government Basketball League and left with one-sided victories Monday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
In the first game, PSS improved its win-loss mark to 6-2 after shutting down Department of Public Works, 95-54.
The educators, which lost badly to Department of Community and Cultural Affairs last time out, jumped the gun on DPW and immediately built a 26-14 spread after the first quarter as seven different players scored.
The 12-point spread was just a portent of things to come as PSS waxed hot in the second, getting eight points from big man Willy Garon and another six from Nick Gross as they extended their advantage to 30 points, 54-24, at the break.
It was a more competitive DPW team that greeted the second half, as the squad was only outscored by five points in the third but still trailed by a mammoth margin, 75-40, heading into the final quarter.
PSS wide body Jacob Villagomez then literally threw his weight around in the fourth, mocking all defenders for all but two of his 14 total points, as the educators ran away with the 41-point victory.
Center Taj Van Buren led a balanced attack by PSS with 19 points, while Gross, Stony Villagomez, Garon, and Jacob Villagomez all wound up in double figures.
Frank Cabrera’s 18 points and Myron Sablan’s 15 paced DPW, which dropped to 1-7 in the standings.
In the second game, NMC Proa followed up its conquest of Legislature Lawmakers last week with a lopsided 114-82 triumph over Procurement and Supply.
NMC struggled early and barely led after the opening quarter, 25-23. Chris Tomokane and Paul Manglona, and Tony Diaz, however, combined to score all but six points of the team’s 32-point second quarter to give NMC a more comfortable 57-34 lead at the half.
It was all NMC all the time in the third, as Diaz tag-teamed with NMI Hall of Famer Tony Satur to extend their lead to 26 points, 82-56, going into the final 10 minutes of the ballgame.
NMC put on the finishing touches in the fourth, outscoring the listless P&S team, 32-26, to earn its fifth win in eight tries. The loss, meanwhile, was the eighth against a lone victory for P&S.
Diaz led a parade of NMC cagers finishing in twin digits with 16 points, while league leading scorer Edgar Pangelinan continued to scorch the hoops, while playing for an underachieving P&S team, coming away with 36.
