The Santa Rosa II D-9ers took an early 1-0 lead in the Men’s Island-Wide Fast-Pitch Softball League’s best-of-three championship series on Monday night as they doubled up on the Seabees ‘4’ under the lights at Tan Ge Field, 8-4.

The D-9ers used their familiar blend of power pitching and timely hitting to take the opener from the Seabees ‘4’ as ace Jess Peterson out-muscled opposing hitters by fanning five and allowing four runs off of seven hits through seven innings to pick up another in his link of complete-game wins.

Peterson was a force from the circle, but his usually solid defense showed signs of imperfection as his fielders combined for four errors—three of which came in the sixth inning.

The miscues weren’t enough to sink the D-9ers; however, as the pennant champs powered out eight runs off of nine hits and capitalized on a number of Seabees sub-par plays to get the win.

First baseman Tony “The Tiger” Camacho led by example from the batters box with a pair of singles and a run scored, while the tireless Roy Celis went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in off of a single and a three bagger.

The duo packed plenty of punch, but timely hitting was just as important to the club’s success as consistency as demonstrated by catcher Jonathan Tenorio’s fifth inning single that ripped down the third baseline to score Greg F. Camacho.

Despite their success, the D-9ers started out in a hole as the Seabees ‘4’ took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The advantage was short lived; however, as the D-9ers hammered out eight runs through the following four innings to take a commanding 8-2 lead of their own in the bottom of the fifth. The Seabees answered with a pair in their next at bats, but that was too little too late.

The action continues tonight as the Seabees ‘4’ look to stave off elimination in Game 2 under the lights at Tan Ge Field at 6:30pm.
