Rota harbor project in Army Corps budget
CNMI Resident Representative Pete A. Tenorio met with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials from the Pacific Ocean Division last week and was briefed on ongoing project of the Corps in the CNMI.
Representing the Corps was the new division commander, Brig. Gen. John W. Peabody; LTC David E. Anderson, commander/district engineer for the Honolulu District; Eugene M. Ban, director of programs for the Pacific Ocean Division; and engineer David Lau.
Peabody shared with Tenorio the President’s budget request for the Corps, which includes $1.05 million for repairs to the West Rota harbor. The harbor was damaged by a series of typhoons over the last several years. It was originally developed by the Japanese during World War II with existing facilities constructed as a joint Corps and CNMI project in 1985.
“It is always a pleasure to meet with officials from the Army Corps of Engineers,” said Tenorio. “They have been very helpful to the CNMI in many areas. I am glad to see that the Rota harbor project has made it into the President’s budget. I will certainly do my part and lobby for it in Congress.”
Also part of the discussion were the Outer Cover Marina Navigation Project, Saipan Lagoon Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration Project, the engineering studies being conducted on the Talafofo Bridge Project, and other potential water projects.
The $12 million Talafofo Bridge Project was funded by the 2005 Transportation Equity Act.
The Army Corps completed the 2003 Water Infrastructure Development Plans for the islands of Saipan, Tinian and Rota, which Tenorio used as a basis for the $3 million federal appropriation for water system improvements on Saipan.
