The Ports Authority has not received any update regarding the planned charter services by Air Saipan.

Lee Cabrera, Commonwealth Ports Authority executive director, said the company has yet to reply to the government since late last week.

“There’s no development on that matter. We’ve already communicated with them so we’re expecting a response [from them],” said Cabrera.

CPA said that, based on its discussion with Air Saipan executives in January this year, it would fly to Saipan on Feb. 15. Early in February, Air Saipan announced the postponement of its Feb. 8 scheduled press conference.

The company reportedly planned on chartering a Boeing 757 aircraft from U.S.-based Ryan International Airlines.

Air Saipan aims to provide charter services between Japan and Saipan and later to other markets, including South Korea, China, Hong Kong and even Australia.

Sources from CPA said Air Saipan could not just begin operations, citing a lack of needed certifications.

Air Saipan’s stakeholders placed the company’s initial investment at $3 million.
