Paddlers ready for Micro Cup
While a number of athletic associations around the CNMI are busy preparing for the 6th Micronesian Games, the Saipan Outrigger Canoe Club is already beginning to plan for the events in October.
The same people who meet in the morning to work the waters in the lagoon are not wasting any time in preparing for the Micro Cup Outrigger Canoe Races that are set to take place from Friday, Oct. 20 to Sunday, Oct. 22.
Before any of the expected clubs from Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Palau, Hawaii, San Diego, and Guam get their canoes in the water, the SOCC will have to tackle a number of tasks including the formation of committees for logistics and hosting the visiting paddlers.
The SOCC will get the ball rolling at 7pm on Wednesday, March 15, at the Oleai Beach Bar and Grill, and the club is looking for its members to not only show up to the meeting but to volunteer to join one of the committees and to actively take part in the process.
In addition to the planning the October event, the SOCC members will be joined by Wyman Rechucher of the Napu Club to hear the latest planning information about the outrigger canoe portion of the 2006 Micronesian Games.
Until recently, the sport looked to be one of the most popular activities left out of the Games due to a lack of coordination between the clubs, but now the paddlers are in synch and full speed ahead toward this summer’s hosting.
As with many sports that will be held this summer’s Games, the outrigger canoe organizers are in search of volunteers to help host the competition.
