Lady Ayuyus bag third win over Lady Rays, 31-28
For the third time this season, the Kagman High School Lady Ayuyus were able to put up a better performance than the Saipan Southern High School Lady Manta Rays as Lynette Babauta, and company led their team to another win in the ongoing 2006 MISA High School Basketball League at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.
Like the last time they played, the Lady Ayuyus trailed in the early goings before exploding in the final period for a 31-28 victory yesterday.
All three Kagman wins have come over the Mantas, who are currently 0-5 in the season.
The Lady Mantas seemed to be on target to hit the win column as the team took the early lead, 6-3, after the first period of play as Henny Elayda and multi-sport athlete Melissa Coleman combined for the team’s offensive production.
After being held to just a field goal and a free throw in the first quarter, the Lady Ayuyus improved and got a triple plus a field goal from Lynette Babauta, who kept Kagman from falling too far behind. By halftime, Saipan Southern held a four-point advantage, 14-10.
The Lady Mantas kept a firm grip on their lead as the low scoring bout continued. Kagman managed to inch closer, though, and trailed by just three points, 16-19, with the payoff period remaining.
With their backs against the wall, the Lady Ayuyus were able to swing favor to their corner as Babauta went off for seven points, while Crystal Mendiola pumped in six points to lead a 15-9 run that turned the game around.
Babauta and Mendiola finished with 12 and eight points to lead the Lady Ayuyus, while Elayda paced the Mantas with 12 points.
