The newly formed Northern Marianas Badminton Federation will hold a membership registration at 4pm today at the pavilion beside the Gilbert C. Ada Gym.

Badminton enthusiasts, players, and interested individuals are urged to attend the event. Membership is open to all in this sport.

NMBF officials, led by appointed-president Jonathan V. Perez, will be present to accept interested individuals as new members. Other appointed officials are Arcie Balagtas, secretary, and Jinky De Belen, treasurer.

The fee for the early registrants on Saturday is $10, while the day after that incoming members will pay $15. The membership fee is good for one year.

The group is holding daily practices from Monday to Friday at 7am to 9am at the Gilbert C. Ada Gym.

Perez is also in talks with Joe Mettao of the Division of Sports and Recreation in the scheduling of the badminton tournament, which is tentatively set after the 6th Micronesian Games.

The NMBF is also trying to become a member of the Northern Marianas Amateur Sports Association.

Badminton is played in more than 150 countries worldwide. There are also badminton federations in the Pacific island nations of Nauru, Fiji, the Cook Islands, the Norfolk Islands and Samoa.

The International Badminton Federation also recently adopted the rally point system, which makes matches faster.

Badminton is popular in Asia and Europe today. It became a full competition sport at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Badminton is also one of the 31 sports being considered for the 13th Pacific Games in 2007 in Apia, Samoa.

Palau, through the Palau Paradise Lions Club, is also organizing an open badminton doubles tournament.
