Thirty-one teams of hard ballers are set to open the 2006 season this morning when the Saipan Little League Baseball Association kicks off the start of the American pastime with a bang at Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field at 8:30am.

According to SLLBA president Mike Borja, VIPs include a guest appearance on the mound from Gov. Benigno R. Fitial, but rather than just sit back, say a few words, and watch the show, Fitial plans on throwing out the first pitch to catcher Joe Lizama of the Division of Sports and Recreation, while House Speaker Oscar M. Babauta looks to score a hit from the batter’s box.

This year the Major division will have 10 teams as the Hustlers return to defend their crown against the Red Sox, Patriots, Twins, Ol’ Aces, Toyota Matrix, Pirates, McDonald’s, and Kagman 1, 2, 3.

In the Junior division, six teams will fight for the pennant as the Hustlers, Toyota Hybrid, Ol’ Aces, Jets, Fielders, and Comets return to Tan Ko, while the Seniors also return a half-dozen squads as the Kagman Aztecs, Tanapag Falcons, Hustlers, Ol’ Aces, Marlins, and Fielders play for keeps.

In addition to the youngsters, the elder statesman of the Big League will face a feisty five-team field that includes the Ol’ Aces, Pirates, Northern Angels, Fielders, and Tanapag Braves.
