DPS probes ex-cop in head-on collision
The Department of Public Safety has been conducting further investigation into a head-on collision between a pick-up truck and a car in Kagman after investigators received information that the driver of the truck, a former police officer, was under the influence of alcohol at that time.
DPS Traffic supervisor Sgt. Joseph Flores told the Saipan Tribune that they are making a follow-up investigation after they were told that one of the drivers was allegedly intoxicated when the accident happened.
Flores said the former police officer was not arrested at that time because the traffic officer reportedly did not detect the smell of alcohol.
“We’re getting all the facts…we need to investigate it further,” Flores said.
DPS Criminal Investigation Bureau chief Maj. Edward H. Manalili told the Saipan Tribune earlier that he also received such information and that his office has been coordinating with Traffic for an investigation.
Sources have identified the former police officer but DPS declined to confirm his identity pending the result of the investigation.
Police said a Toyota Tacoma pick-up and a Hyundai Elantra collided head-on near the Kagman intersection in the evening of Feb. 12, 2006.
Preliminary investigation showed that the truck that was traveling north suddenly encroached on the southbound lane, colliding head-on with the car.
The driver of the Hyundai, an Asian woman, sustained a fractured right wrist and lower leg and lacerations to the leg and face. Her passenger, an infant who was secured in a child seat, was unhurt.
The driver of the truck was not injured. But his passenger, an eight-year-old boy who was sitting on the truck’s bed, sustained a fractured leg. The two other children sitting on the truck’s bed complained of pain in the shoulder, neck and head.
Both vehicles sustained extensive damage.
