Fitial won’t occupy Governor’s Residence
Just like his predecessor, Gov. Benigno R. Fitial has no plans of moving into the Governor’s Official Residence on Capitol Hill.
Fitial said Friday that he and his family will stay in their residence in Gualo Rai.
Fitial, a former top executive in the private sector, had built a house with a million-dollar view atop Gualo Rai Hill.
“No, I’m not moving in there [government building] because I have my own house,” he said, noting that he has actually not been inside the governor’s official residence.
Fitial’s predecessor, then Gov. Juan N. Babauta, had also opted to stay in his house in Garapan during his four-year term.
Babauta had said that choosing to live in his house was more economical for the government.
The official residence was used only for official functions.
Meantime, Fitial said that the maintenance of the official residence is under the responsibility of governor’s Special Administrative Assistant Evelyn Fleming.
Recently, Fleming’s office recently used the residence as venue for hosting a dinner for the returning CNMI troops.
Government sources said the official residence needs a major renovation work to be classified as livable.
The place, located near the Governor’s Office on the hill, was last occupied by Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio.
Tenorio had served three times as CNMI governor, the latest of which was in 1998 to 2002. (Liberty Dones)
