Range master Ogumoro is charged
The Attorney General’s Office filed charges yesterday against Department of Public Safety’s shooting range master Ambrosio T. Ogumoro for beating his wife and for illegal possession of a gun and ammunitions.
Ogumoro, 47, was charged with assault and battery, unlawful possession of a firearm, and two counts of unlawful possession of ammunition.
Chief Prosecutor Jeffery Warfield Sr. stated in the information that Ogumoro unlawfully possessed an automatic weapon—a U.S. M1A Springfield Armory rifle with a base receiver bolt assembly—in October 2005. That same month, he allegedly slapped his wife and pulled her hair
The chief prosecutor said Ogumoro also unlawfully possessed 16 rounds of high-powered 7.62 mm ammunition and one 20-round magazine.
Warfield said that, on Feb. 10, 2005, the defendant unlawfully possessed 9mm, 45 mm, 7.62 mm, 5.56-mm caliber ammunitions, and 12-gauge buckshot ammunition.
Police stated in court papers that Ogumoro was also allegedly possibly involved in gun smuggling and that he had threatened to kill Gov. Benigno R. Fitial and blow up DPS.
Members of the DPS’ elite Tactical Response Enforcement Team, with the assistance of some Criminal Investigation Bureau detectives, arrested Ogumoro at DPS on Feb. 10, 2006.
Police recommended a $5 million cash bail for the defendant’s temporary liberty, but the court set it at $1million instead.
On Thursday, Wiseman granted Ogumoro’s motion for bail modification. He set a $100,000 bond with a 10 percent cash deposit and the balance of $90,000 to be secured by property; a curfew from 8pm to 6am, an order to stay away from all seaports and airports, and an order to obey all CNMI laws, among other conditions.
Ogumoro is the weapons specialist for the DPS who is also assigned as official armorer. He is in charge of the Armory Unit and the Firearms and Criminal Records Section.
The day after Ambrosio Ogumoro’s arrest, his brother, then acting police director Capt. Aniceto Ogumoro, was also arrested after police raided his house on Capitol Hill where they allegedly recovered three rifles and 25 boxes of ammunitions.
The arraignment of the Ogumoro brothers was set for Monday.
