Leadership seminars make waves in NMI
A series of Leadership Development Seminars is making waves throughout the CNMI, providing participants on Rota and Tinian with administrative, human resource, and leadership knowledge and skills to enable them become highly successful in society.
Over 50 attendees on Rota and Tinian participated in a variety of activities, including case studies, small group discussion, personal and group assessments, and directed study to maximize their learning experience.
Dr. Peter Eche, a graduate B.Sc. Pharmacy, M. Sc. Pharmacy and PhD Management, presented the seminars. He is the author of The Young Shall Grow, and is currently working on a new book, Evolution of Success. Dr. Eche is the executive vice president of John F. Kennedy Center in the Philippines; he also established Legacy Institute, and now the World Pacific Center in the CNMI.
The basics of leadership were the principle focus of his seminars. Topics included: Principles and Styles of Leadership, Effective Communication, Building Successful Teams, Managing Conflict, Delegation, Coaching, Feedback and Counseling, and Creativity.
Participants learned about the hiring process and the various options available to ensure proper hiring. They developed skills in giving and receiving feedback, as well as how to recognize and resolve conflict. Finally, creativity and teamwork were emphasized throughout the seminars as participants learned the skills necessary to create an effective and energized workplace that encourages everyone to attain peak performance.
Comments received from the participants include: “I recommend this seminar for potential leaders. …The issues discussed touch on many positive methods that a leader should and must use in order to create efficiency and quality delivery of service.” One simply described it as: “an excellent seminar, the best on that I have attended.”
The seminar was sponsored by the Northern Marianas College University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, in collaboration with the NMC Community Development Institute and the World Pacific Center. The seminars were sponsored through federal grant funding.
NMC-UCEDD provides educational programs and technical assistance services to support the independence, productivity, and integration into the mainstream of society of individuals with developmental disabilities. UCEDD collaborates with various public and private organizations to improve services for people with developmental disabilities, and offers various academic training programs, information sharing, capacity building, and policy advocacy.
