Aboveground storage tank workshop set
The Division of Environmental Quality will be holding a series of workshops on regulations relating to Aboveground Storage Tanks on all three islands, as part of efforts to educate operators on proper storage tank management.
DEQ public information officer Reina Camacho said the workshop would explain the newly adopted AST regulations, the AST permitting process, and general information on aboveground storage tanks.
The Tinian workshop will be held on Feb. 27 and 28 at the DEQ Tinian office, while the AST Workshop on Rota will be on March 2 and 3 at NMC Campus-Rota.
Camacho said the deadline to register for the workshops on Tinian and Rota is on Feb. 23. She said registration is available at DEQ offices on Tinian and Rota and can be submitted through fax.
The Saipan AST workshop is on March 7, 2006 and will be conducted at the Pacific Islands Club Charley’s Cabaret from 8am to 5pm. The deadline to register for the Saipan workshop is on March 1.
There will be a corresponding fee—$15 per participant—for each workshop. As space may be limited, advanced registration for the workshops is required. Registration information may be obtained at the DEQ office. Contact the office for more information at 664-8500 and DEQ staff will be available to answer questions on aboveground storage tanks and the workshops.
“DEQ is also reminding that permits to operate existing aboveground storage tanks must be applied for and received by July 11, 2006,” Camacho said.
Most all tank systems in existence since July 11, 2005 that store hazardous substances, such as diesel fuel, and have a tank capacity of more than 500 gallons must obtain a permit from the DEQ by the July 11 deadline.
Aboveground tank systems installed after July 11, 2005 require a permit to install from the DEQ prior to installation and a permit to operate from the DEQ prior to operation, said Camacho.
Permit application forms are available at the DEQ or at their website at www.deq.gov.mp. (Marconi Calindas)
