Aside from its no-holds barred battles, last Saturday’s “Trench Warz: Caged In” also showcased talents in boxing and grappling at the Trench Tech-Purebred Saipan Gym in Garapan.

Having the honor of kicking off the event were boxers Chris Sablan and Robert Palacios who both lasted throughout the three three-minute rounds.

Both fighters were able to land strong punches but in the end, it was Sablan who prevailed via unanimous decision as all three judges scored the bout, 10-9, in his favor.

Shortly after, 14-year-old T.J. Ocampo of Trench Tech and and 17-year-old Herman Duenas of Graccie Barra showcased their grappling skills. Ocampo, son of CNMI National wrestler Joe Ocampo, showed his potential as he gave Duenas a run for his money before tapping out. Duenas, who fought in the inaugural Trench Warz as a boxer, was able to execute an arm bar to win seven minutes into the 10-minute bout.

The battle was followed by another grappling bout between Walter Manglona and Danny Atalig, both training out of Trench Tech. The fight was Atalig’s second in Trench Warz as he also battled as a kickboxer last November.

Manglona, who entered with a 16-lb weight advantage over Atalig, was the early aggressor and managed to work favor to his corner. Atalig, though, used his quickness to counter and was able to force Manglona to tap out via crucifix.

Rusy Ada of Graccie Barra and Ken Tanzawa of Trench Tech also battled in the same discipline and went the distance resulting in the decision coming from the judges. Ada went on to win the fight via unanimous decision.

The crowd was also in for a special treat as Lar Wongtanya and Bunsong Srisomkhilo battled in kickboxing, Muey Thai style.

With all eyes focused on the cage, the two kickboxers put on a traditional performance before the fight. The two battled in three three-minute rounds, exchanging a flurry of kicks and knee blows before the referee decided the bout was a draw.

“Trench Warz: Caged In” was witnessed by over 400 screaming spectators. The event was coordinated by Trench Tech, with coordinator Cuki Alvarez indicating that the school will host more fighting events in the near future in hopes of promoting mixed martial arts.
