No Zone wins fifth straight, DPW hits win column
Defending champion No Zone picked up its fifth straight victory, while the Department of Public Works broke into the win column as action in the ongoing 2006 Inter-Government Basketball League continued Monday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
No Zone continues to play well and has yet to drop a game since its opening night loss. With all-around veteran Ed Diaz having his way on offense, No Zone was able to improve to 5-1 with an 80-50 victory over Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting Fire Dawgs.
No Zone got early production from shooter John Sablan, who went berserk in the opening 10 minutes of play and scored 12 points, outscoring the entire ARFF squad, which was limited to just 10 points. Sablan’s numbers enabled No Zone to build a double-digit lead as the team put up 21 points on the board.
Diaz then took control of the game as the league’s fourth leading scorer entered a zone of his own and unleashed 18 points, including the team’s final 10 points of the half to lead his team to a 20-point lead at the break, 43-23.
Diaz added another nine points in the third as No Zone continued to pull away.
No Zone prevented ARFF from scoring past the 15-point mark in each of the four quarters and cruised to the easy victory.
Diaz finished with a game-high 38 points, while Jerome Reyes was the only ARFF player in double figures with 26 points.
Earlier, DPW notched its first win of the season with a 54-49 victory over the Customs Inspectors.
The two teams were neck and neck for most parts of the game, with the Inspectors leading by just two points after each of the first two periods—10-8 and 27-25.
DPW was able to jump ahead but not by much and led 42-41 heading in the fourth quarter, then put up a stronger charge in the last 10 minutes to hold off Customs.
Eric Atalig led DPW with a game-high 18 points, while Frank Cabrera and Frank Torres contributed 13 and 10 points.
