The start of the 2006 Inter-Village Youth Basketball League last Monday was postponed and has been reset for this evening.

League coordinator Joe Mettao said yesterday that the season opener originally scheduled last Feb. 13 between the Garapan Rollers I and the Chalan Kanoa Saints will be rescheduled as the G-Rollers I must first settle their entry fee obligation.

Mettao said yesterday’s bout between the San Antonio Sixers I and Hoops was also canceled after Hoops pulled out of the league.

“I just learned that they pulled out, so we’re going to have to cancel the game and fix up another schedule,” Mettao said.

With that, having the honors of opening the 2006 season are the Matansa Sparks and the Sixers II, who will battle at 6pm this evening at the As Matuis basketball court.

Meanwhile, Mettao said he is still not sure about tomorrow’s bout between the G-Rollers II and the Sixers III. The game will go on as scheduled if the G-Rollers are able to settle their entry fee in time. If the two teams meet, they will play at the Garapan basketball court.

With the pullout of Hoops, only eight teams will vie for this year’s title as Kagman has also joined the mix. Kagman first takes the court next Tuesday against the Sparks.

All teams are required to pay a $100 entrance fee and have no more than 15 players in the roster, all of whom must play if present at a game.

“I know a lot of people are concerned about winning, but we’re talking about kids, so lets give all of them the chance to get some experience,” co-coordinator Jonathan Tenorio said earlier.

The league will feature a round-robin regular season with all teams advancing to the playoffs. The pennant champion and runner-up of the regular season will receive first-round byes in the playoffs

“We’re looking at the league concluding sometime in April,” Tenorio said.
