Lady Ayuyus kick off MISA cage league with thrilling win
The 2006 Marianas Interscholastic Sports Association High School Basketball League kicked off in style yesterday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium as the Lady Ayuyus of Kagman High School had just enough juice to survive.
The Lady Ayuyus were taken to the limit but still overcame a tough task with a nail-biting 37-36 victory over the Saipan Southern High School Manta Rays.
Both teams had respectable charges in the opening half and matched each other well to keep within striking distance of each other. Kagman was able to take the driver seat, but just a slim margin as Ma. Janelle Guiao drilled eight points, while returnee Lynette Babauta and Emy Reyes swooshed the net for five points apiece to help Kagman take a 20-18 lead at the break.
The Mantas had their moments in the opening half courtesy of a balanced scoring attack. Multi-sport athlete Melissa Coleman, Joana Omar, and Coralee Echang each had four points to spearhead Southern’s push.
The Mantas were determined to return to the south with a win in hand and gave a good fight in the final minutes. Henny Elayda and Coleman combined for 10 points, but their efforts came up a bit short as the Ayuyus were able to hold on for the win.
Babauta led the Lady Ayuyus with nine points before fouling out, while Guiao, Mabel, and Reyes finished with seven or more points.
Elayda paced Saipan Southern with nine points, while Coleman and Echang finished with eight and six points.
Shortly after, the boys teams of the two schools went head to head. Saipan Southern came out storming and went on an 11-2 run to start the game, but the Kagman cagers were able to recover and take the lead at the break. Official results were not available as of press time.
