CPA expects Air Saipan charter flight tomorrow
Commonwealth Ports Authority executive director Lee Cabrera expects to receive Air Saipan’s first chartered flight to the island tomorrow, Feb. 15.
Cabrera said in an interview yesterday that, based on their discussion in late January, Air Saipan’s chartered aircraft would land at the Saipan International Airport on Feb. 15.
As of yesterday, no feedback has been received from Air Saipan about any possible postponement.
“We have not received any update yet as per change in plan. We are hopeful that the chartered flight will arrive,” said Cabrera yesterday afternoon.
Air Saipan earlier postponed its scheduled press conference on Feb. 8 to an indefinite date.
At that time, Air Saipan vice president for international marketing and corporate development Craig Champion had said that details of the chartered aircraft were still being finalized.
The company reportedly plan on chartering a Boeing 757 aircraft from U.S.-based Ryan International Airlines.
Cabrera said that, based on initial discussions, the aircraft would be emblazoned with “tropical colors” and with the word “Saipan.”
Air Saipan aims to provide charter services between Japan and Saipan.
It plans to eventually tap other tourist markets, including Korea, China, Hong Kong and even Australia.
Air Saipan’s stakeholders placed the company’s initial investment at $3 million.
