Super Bowl, no Micro Games take headlines
News that hit earlier in the week about the CNMI possibly giving up on hosting the 2006 Micronesian Games caught the attention of many, and soon, the quadrennial sports event took headlines in the local sports scene after the government indicated that the Commonwealth will not host the Games.
With sports federations prepping their athletes the best they could in hopes of putting on a good show while representing the CNMI at home in the summer, all were struck with a blow after it was announced that the Games will not be held on the CNMI.
While the Games were in limbo, football fans joined others from around the world in watching the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Seattle Seahawks, 21-10, in Super Bowl XL.
Thousands of fans filled various establishments such as Fiesta Resort & Spa, Saipan Grand Hotel, World Resort, Pacific Islands Club, Godfathers, Hamiltons, Hafadai Beach Hotel, and AJ’s Restaurant, among others, to root for their team.
The Hustlers also had a share of the spotlight after keeping their season alive and beating the Pirates to prevent a sweep in the SML Fall League championship series. Cleanup batter Manny Sablan went 4-for-5 to lead the Hustlers to a 13-7 victory last Saturday at the Kan Pacific Baseball Field. The two teams returned for Game 4 on Sunday. However, the bout was postponed due to heavy rainfall.
LIPS-Mobil also won on consecutive nights over the weekend to earn the final slot in the semifinals of the Budweiser-Coca Cola 6th UFO Inter-Organizational Basketball League, beating NAMFREL-Region V/Sabungero and Cavite-Country House at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium. The team joins Visminda-Tambayan/Nel Atalig, Samahang Ilokano at Pangasinense-Flor Miranda, and Cabalen-RP Construction/Transamerica in the semis.
Meanwhile, action continued in the 2006 Inter-Government Basketball League and the Saipan Softball Association leagues. The Northern Marianas Amateur Volleyball Association also held its qualifier for the Micro Games.
