While the Northern Marianas Islands Triathlon Federation has been getting closer to naming the adult endurance enthusiasts who will represent the CNMI in the 2006 Micronesian Games, they are continuing to develop the junior members with the second Kids Tryathlon of the new year.

In an effort to provide the next generation a chance at living a healthy lifestyle, the NMITF will offer an assortment of abbreviated distance races to kids of all ages tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Kan Pacific Swimming Pool in Marpi.

According to race coordinator Sue Knecht, this weekend’s event will be the second event of the points series. While awards will be distributed to all of the top male and female finishers in each age division, a special point bonus will go to the kids who complete all the Tryathlons in the series.

The youngest competitors will compete in the 5-and-Under Tykes and Trikes division, while the rest of the kids will be split up into the 6-7, 8-9, 10-11, and 12-13-year-old divisions.

The distances are going to increased from last month’s event, as the youngest racers of the 5-and-Under Tykes and Trikes division will challenge a 25-meter swim in the pool, a 300m two or three-wheeled effort, and a 200-m run.

The 6-7 year olds will have a bit more to do as well with a 50m swim, a 4-kilometer bike ride, and a 1-km run to the finish, while the 8-9-year-old division will do the same with the exception of a 100-m swim.

The veterans and rookies of the 10-11-year-old division will have even more of a test for the best as they will have crank out a 200-m swim, a 6-km bike, and a 2-km run. The elder statesmen of the 12-13 year-old-division will tackle the same distance.

Registration for the multi-sport melee begins bright and early at 6:45am, with the first events beginning at 7:30am. According to Knecht, volunteers are still needed for the event.
