The NMI Retirement Fund board will decide whether to issue another job vacancy announcement for a legal counsel position or choose from its previous pool of applicants.

NMI Fund administrator Karl T. Reyes said the matter was to be tackled in last night’s meeting of the trustees.

The Fund remains without a legal counsel after its first choice for the job, Karen Klaver, eventually refused the offer.

Klaver, a legal counsel for the Public School System, had submitted an application for the job but shortly after she was accepted late last year, she notified the agency that she is no longer available.

Reyes said that Klaver was one of three lawyers who responded to the Fund’s job vacancy announcement.

“The board will decide whether to offer the position to those who have already applied or if we will put out a new announcement,” said Reyes.

The Fund offers a maximum of $65,000 annual salary for a legal counsel position.

The Fund has been without an in-house lawyer for over two years. It makes do with short-term contracts with private lawyers for legal services.

The Fund is entrusted with the task of managing and investing retirement money for members. It is also tasked to administer the health and life insurance program for government employees, and oversee the Workers’ Compensation Commission.
