Grade school students who have a knack for the arts still have a chance to submit their entries for the Division of Environmental Quality’s Environmental Awareness Logo Contest.

DEQ’s public information officer Reina Camacho said the last date for submission of entries is on Monday, Feb. 13.

“The contest is open to public and private schools, grades six through 12, on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota,” she said.

Interested grade school individuals must note that entries should reflect this year’s Environmental Awareness theme, “Our Environment, the Pride of Marianas.” Drawings must be submitted on an 8”x11” paper and include the artist’s name, school, and grade level.

Camacho said the winning logo would be used for promotional materials in this year’s Environmental Awareness activities. All other entries will become the property of DEQ and will be used for public education and outreach materials.

The 23rd Annual Environmental Awareness will be celebrated throughout April 2006. Camacho said this year’s theme intends to top the commemoration of previous Environmental Awareness Week events.

This year the division will be focusing on community involvement, stewardship, and fun, said Camacho.

Annual events included this year will be the Environmental Expo, Recycling Competition, Marianas Cleanup, Lagoon Cleanup, SCUBA Cleanup, and a Poem and Essay Competition.

“The CNMI community will have an opportunity to nominate an ‘environmental hero.’ There will be awards for each of the categories: Business, Community, Individual, and Young Hero,” said Camacho.

For more information about the DEQ’s Environmental Awareness celebration and its activities, interested individuals and parties can contact Jonathan Arriola, chairman of the Environmental Awareness Week 2006, or Camacho at 664-8500.
