CHC, No Zone drub opponents
Commonwealth Health Center put Procurement and Supply in life support, while No Zone put the cuffs on Public School System’s high-octane offense in the fourth quarter in the continuation of the 2006 Inter-Government Basketball League Tuesday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
In the first game, CHC opened strong and maintained the pace all throughout the game in handing P&S its fifth loss in as many games, 87-63.
CHC was well in its way to bettering its mark to 4-1 after outscoring P&S 21-12 after the first quarter. They didn’t letup in the second quarter either, matching P&S point for point to enter intermission with a 47-36 spread.
Not even the 10-minute break was enough to shake P&S from its first half doldrums, as CHC continued to pour it on and went on to outscore them 23-11 in the third quarter that shoved the team to a 23-point lead, 70-47, heading into the fourth and final quarter of the ballgame.
It was all over but the shouting in the final 10 minutes, as CHC ran away with the victory even though it only bested P&S by a point in the fourth, 17-16.
Whippet-quick guard Ken Kalen led CHC’s almost surgical dismantling of P&S with 22 points, while bruising forward Tom Tudela added 20 markers. Sharpshooter Tom Diaz and Samson Fernandez kicked in 12 and 10 points, respectively, for good measure.
Edgar Pangelinan and Ray Takai paced P&S in the loss with 16 and 11 points.
In the second game, No Zone gave PSS a neat lesson in defense and John Sablan mentored them on the art of shooting, as the Department of Public Safety team beat the educators by a whooping score of 92-73.
No Zone and PSS were locked up in a tight one in the first three quarters before the latter shut down the educators’ shooters in the final 10 minutes, which resulted in the lopsided final score.
Sablan was on fire all game long and finished with a night-high 39 points. All-around player Ed Diaz also chipped in 20 for No Zone, which improved its win-loss card to 5-1.
Taj Van Buren and Gary Lashley tried hard to right the ship but fell short finishing with 20 and 14 markers in the loss, which dropped PSS to 3-1 in the standings.
