The Islanders continued their return to winning ways on Wednesday night as they lost an early lead before regaining the advantage and holding on to edge the Proa, 9-8, under the lights of Tan Ge Field in the continuation of the Men’s Island-Wide Fast-Pitch Softball League.

Reno Celis was a powerhouse at the plate as the shortstop went 3-for-4 with a pair of singles, a triple, and four runs batted in to lift the Islanders to their fourth win of the season.

The veteran slugger wasn’t the only free swinging Islander to come out of the dugout as right fielder Mel Tenorio also went 3-for-4 with a string of base hits and an RBI, while centerfielder went 2-for-3 with a pair of base knocks, a sacrifice fly, and a stolen base.

Second baseman Dennis Ngeskebei also smacked the ball around with a pair of singles and a run batted in to finish 2-for-4 on the night.

The win improved the Islanders to 4-5 on the season, while the disappointing Proa fell further into last place at 2-6. Some say that the talented team is underachieving while others say that their lackluster record is a testament of the improving talent of the Saipan Softball Association’s other teams. Either way, the Proa are going to have to support their Hall of Fame pitcher Tony Satur if they plan to make the postseason.

After taking a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the third, the Islander lost their edge as the Proa pounded out three runs in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game. Rather than dwell on the disappearance of their advantage, the Islanders answered with a three- run salvo in their next at bats to regain their three-run advantage, 9-6. The Proa rallied with a pair in the top of the sixth to pull to within one run, but they were unable to get any closer.

D-9ers vs. Seabees ‘4’ postponed due to rain

The late game of the night between the D-9ers and the Seabees ‘4’ was unfortunately rained out as the teams were preparing for the most important game of the night—one with pennant ramifications.

At 5-2, the D-9ers hold a one-game lead in the race for first place, while the second place Seabees ‘4’ (4-2) hold a game in hand as they push toward the end of the season.
