Editor of Shanghai Post checks out the Marianas
The editor of a major newspaper in China recently visited the Northern Marianas, a development that the Marianas Visitors Authority expects will provide the destination additional media exposure in the Asian country.
Shanghai Morning Post editor Wang Wei Jun went on a four-day trip to Saipan and Tinian, from Jan. 21 to 24, according to acting MVA managing director Tess Castro.
Castro said the MVA, along with the Fiesta Resort & Spa and the Tinian Dynasty Hotel & Casino, hosted the journalist’s stay in the CNMI.
“Shanghai Morning Post is a popular daily newspaper in Shanghai, China. It is regarded as one of the most influential newspapers in Shanghai, which appeals to a wide range of readers by covering extensively on various industries and sectors including daily news, IT [information technology], lifestyle, tourism, finance and investment,” Castro said.
The acting managing director noted the wide circulation of the publication in China.
“In every Monday issue, the newspaper has a tourism supplement, which attracts travel enthusiasts and white-collar readers. With this, we hope to increase our visitor arrivals from the China market,” Castro added.
Chinese tourists totaled 32,920 in 2005. The year’s last quarter showed a 5-percent improvement in Chinese arrivals from 9,031 in 2004 to 9,510 in 2005, which slightly mitigated the impact of dwindling visitor arrivals from Japan following the pullout of Japan Airlines’ regular flights to Saipan beginning October 2005.
Last month, 2,916 Chinese visitors came to the islands, increasing by 4 percent from December 2004’s 2,803 Chinese tourists.
