Gov. Benigno R. Fitial has touted the Commonwealth-wide rule of the Covenant Party, saying this gives his administration a good start.

“The general election of 2005 provides us with an unprecedented opportunity to completely unite our Commonwealth,” Fitial said at the inauguration of Tinian Mayor Jose P. San Nicolas on Friday.

“The Saipan, Tinian, and Rota mayors are all from the same political party: the Covenant Party, a party formed only four years ago, and a party that now controls the administration as well as both Houses of the 15th Legislature,” he added.

Fitial expressed hope that this unity would cause tangible economic results for the Commonwealth.

“During this time of great financial challenge, we have a terrific opportunity, amid our severe financial crisis, to stand united as one Commonwealth devoted to the goal of economic revival. We can all work together, as never before, to put politics aside and concentrate on implementing sound policies to significantly improve our economy and keep our government solvent,” he said.

Fitial and Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez, of the Covenant Party, were sworn in Monday, Jan. 9, 2006.

On the same day, their fellow Covenant members—Sen. Joseph Mendiola and Rep. Oscar M. Babauta—were elected by the 15th Legislature to serve as Senate president and House Speaker, respectively.

Tinian Mayor San Nicolas is a Covenant Party member. So are reelected Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela, who switched from the Democratic Party to the Covenant Party in 2004, and Rota Mayor Joseph Inos.
