Tony Camacho was a one-man wrecking crew at Tan Ge Softball Field on Wednesday night, as the D-9ers free-swinging first baseman led his team to a 13-7 victory over the previously undefeated Seabees ‘4’ squad in continuation of the Men’s Island-Wide Fast-Pitch Softball League under the lights at the Oleai Sports Complex.

Camacho was unstoppable as he went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a two-run homerun, two doubles, a single, four runs batted in, and three scores on the night for the blue bombers.

Third baseman Dante Sablan turned in a great night for the D-9ers as well by reaching base in three out of four attempts with a pair of bunt-singles and a double that resulted in three scores for the northern boys.

While the duo was strong at the plate, pitcher Jess Peterson was a force on the mound as the veteran pitcher allowed just seven runs off of seven hits through seven-innings. After trailing 1-0 through one and a half innings, the D-9ers got on the ball by scoring in all of their remaining at bats.

The D-9ers first scored with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning before turning on the heat with three more in the third. They continued to pile on the pressure by scoring a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings before cranking out four in the sixth to put the Seabees ‘4’ out of commission.

The win gave the Seabees ‘4’ and D-9ers matching 4-1 records atop the men’s league, and will meet again later this month when the teams take the field on Wednesday, Jan 25, at 8pm.

Islanders 5, Proa 2

NMASA Hall of Fame fastballer Tony Satur got minimal run support from his hitters as the Proa fell for the fourth time despite his season debut against the Islanders in the Saipan Softball Association’s late game of the double header in Oleai.

Satur used a mix of speed and precision from the rubber to slow the Islanders to five runs off of nine hits before coming out of the game in the top of the fifth with an injury to his hand.

Greg Ada got help from the defense in relief, but the Proa offense was only able to muster a pair of runs for the pitching combo in the loss to fall to 1-4 on the season.

Despite facing a pair of hefty hurlers, the Islanders scored five runs in the opening four innings to notch the second win in an otherwise lackluster season on the diamond.

Catcher Diego T. Benavente transitioned from the CNMI’s No. 2 to his team’s No. 1 hitter in style with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate. Benavente racked up three singles and scored the game-winning run in his season debut, while teammate Reno Celis went 3-for-4 with three singles and two runs batted in.
