About 100 soldiers, including the CNMI’s own soldiers, arrived in Hawaii on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, after serving a one-year tour of duty in Iraq.

The Marianas Hawaii Office, led by Liaison Officer Jean D. Sablan, joined the committee to welcome home the soldiers. Sablan was joined by several staff members at the Barbars Point Airport hangar.

The soldiers that arrived were part of three groups of soldiers to arrive on the islands. The first group arrived earlier and the third group was slated to arrive the following morning.

“One could visibly see the bittersweet emotions that ran high among the soldiers who were given numerous hugs and kisses and covered with leis from well wishers and their loved ones,” said the MHO in a statement.

The welcoming ceremony began at 3:30pm and lasted approximately 20 minutes. Besides the MHO staff, others who joined in welcoming the soldiers included spouses, friends and family members who were moved to tears of joy and elation that their loved ones and compatriots were finally safe and sound on U.S. ground.
