For the first time, the athletics competition in the Micronesian Games could feature cross country and half marathon events.

This according to Northern Marianas Athletics president Kurt Barnes, who earlier said that the two events may be included in the athletics schedule.

During their recent visit to Saipan last month, Oceania Athletics Association executive director Yvonne Mullins had urged NMA to include the two events.

“You’ll take the leadership role in cross country if you do so,” Mullins said as she informed NMA officials that the OAA is moving towards strengthening cross country in the region. “We want to get involved in that and you could be the first to hold it.”

Barnes had explained that several ideas are in place such as hosting the cross country in the early days of the competition and the half marathon towards the end of the Games.

Details of the two events will be provided at a later date.

NMA and the Marianas Visitors Authority are currently at the forefront of organizing the first Saipan Marathon, which will take place this Jan. 21. The inaugural event will coincide with a half marathon and 10k runs.

Mullins and other OAA officials were on island to take part in the 2nd Micronesia Athletics Championships last Dec. 14 and 15. (Shan Seman)
