New DPS commissioner wants to focus on frontline personnel
Newly appointed Department of Public Safety Commissioner Juan I. Wabol wants to focus on the frontline personnel in the department.
“My priority here is to help the frontline personnel…to boost the low morale of those in the frontline operations,” Wabol told the Saipan Tribune in an interview yesterday.
The commissioner said these personnel are those from rank and file at the Criminal Investigation Bureau, Fire Department, Patrol, Traffic, and other sections within the department.
Wabol underscored the need to help these personnel by providing them, among other things, equipment and uniforms.
The commissioner urged all the employees at DPS to set aside politics and differences.
“Let’s work together since we are here to help the public,” he said.
With respect to his appointment, Wabol said he is very thankful to Gov. Benigno R. Fitial and Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez for having confidence in his ability to run the department.
Wabol has to undergo Senate confirmation.
Although he comes from the Fire Division, Wabol stressed that his mission is not only for Fire, but for the whole department.
Wabol has been with the DPS for 24 years now. He spent his entire career at the Fire Division. He started as a fire fighter 1 and rose through the ranks until he became the acting chief of the division.
Meanwhile, Wabol also disclosed his appointment of Francis Taimanao as deputy commissioner for operations.
He also tapped Police Maj. Aniceto Ogumoro as director of police.
Juana Deleon Guerrero, a long-time civilian employee at the Bureau of Motor Vehicle, is now the chief of BMV.
The then-BMV director, Gregory Castro, was transferred to the training division. Acting DPS spokesman Police Officer Eric David is now the full-time spokesperson of the department.
