The rain that spoiled some beachside barbeques over the weekend was a blessing to one of the CNMI’s most frequently trafficked facilities, as the grass at the Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field can use all of the water that falls before players take the diamond next month.

In advance of all the pomp and circumstance, the Saipan Little League Baseball Association convened in the conference room of the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium on Saturday to get the ball rolling for America’s national pastime.

Coaches, managers, umpires, parents, and organizers exchanged their thoughts and theories on how to provide Saipan’s future stars the best program possible, as well as to sort out some of the organizational issues with regards to age limits and paperwork.

“This is only to remind them again—to pick up the pace, turn in the documents, and to reaffirm the age alignments. We have to finalize the paperwork before accepting the teams,” said SLLBA president Mike Borja.

Borja said that he is very excited for his first season as the head of the SLLBA, and that the CNMI was mainly focused on today’s inauguration over the weekend, that the board will be moving “full force” to get the business community involved with the successful league.

Borja said that all four leagues will get underway next month, and that the Junior, Senior, and Big leaguers will all get a chance to play under the lights at Tan Ko Field during the season.

Organizers expect a record number of team in all four of the divisions as well as an increase in the turnout for the tee-ball program and the girls’ softball pilot program this season.
