Chinese community center opens
The Chinese Association Center was officially opened Saturday afternoon with the ribbon cutting attended by prominent dignitaries not only from Saipan but also from Guam and China.
Gov.-elect Benigno R. Fitial and Lt. Gov.-elect Tim Villagomez graced the event with the former congratulating the Chinese Association of Saipan for the opening of the center, which is located across the Aging Center and Gold’s Gym on Garapan.
The building has been named after the association’s co-founder Tan Siu Lin, who also gave a brief speech congratulating the association and thanking guests during the event.
Tan also expressed his gratitude to the association for naming the building after him. Since its establishment in 1987, Tan has donated more than $300,000 to the Chinese Association of Saipan.
Tan ended his speech with hopes that the building will serve not only as a community center for overseas Chinese but the entire CNMI community as well.
Other government and business officials also witnessed the ribbon cutting ceremony.
The event also unveiled two signages naming the building after Tan as well as the Chinese education center. A symbolical roasted pig cutting ceremony was also done followed by the lion and dragon dance ceremonies.
The Chinese Association of Saipan currently has 100 active members, said outgoing president Rose Chan.
