Ho-ho-holiday break comes to an end
The holidays are over, meaning that more sports action will resume.
Even with the holidays at hand, several athletes took time to put in a fair share of sweat in preparation for a better new year.
A couple days after Christmas, eight teams invaded the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium in hopes of claiming top honors in the 2005 IVYBL Christmas Tournament, and none was able to compete better than the Garapan Rollers I, who strolled to a perfect elimination round record before beating sister-team G-Rollers II in the semifinals and edging the San Antonio Sixers I in the championship.
Tinian made their trip to Saipan worthwhile as the team bagged third place while G-II placed fourth.
The Matansa Sparks didn’t go home empty handed as coach George Cruz’s troops won the Sportsmanship Award, while Jericho Cruz of G-I was recognized as the most valuable player.
Meanwhile, action was intense on the tennis courts as netters continued their push to securing slots on the CNMI National team to the Micronesian Games this June.
Veterans Jeff Race, Tim Quan, and Kana Aikawa kept their perfect records intact, while young guns Vivian Lee, Mayuko Arriola, Ralph Buenaventura, Nicolas Son, Ji Hoon Heo, Lila Mailman, Audrey Motto, and Keith Gabaldon each had shiny moments.
Nina Mosley continues to have a sensational career in the pool as she dominated and won nine of 10 races in the Guam International Meet, which also included swimmers from japan and Hong Kong.
With that, Mosley and Doris Rangamar were both named female athletes of the month. Also taking top honors were Tyrone Omar in the male student category, Motto in the female student, and J.P. Sablan in the male athlete category.
Also making a return was the Saipan Softball Association, which resumed Tuesday night at the Tan Ge Softball Field.
Also, football fans were focused on their television set and received a big treat after Texas and USC were neck and neck in the Rose Bowl, with Texas claiming the National Championship with a 41-38 victory.
