‘Let’s help ourselves first’
The community has spoken out against the establishment of the Safe Haven Project here in the CNMI. The public’s main concern is the manner with which the AG handled of the proposal. The AG had scheduled for the first arrival of these children before the agreement was finalized. This reflects an underhanded procedure to keep the public out. The timing is very suspicious since this operation would definitely end up with lots of legal problems in the future. And, of course, this would open up opportunities for legal counsels with matching experience.
The AG is part of the Governor’s leadership mechanism to ensure the Chief Executive functioned coherently in protecting the general welfare of our Commonwealth. Painfully, I felt the side effects of this issue. I got caught between two merciful challenges: 1) to render assistance for these children, or 2) to focus on finding ways to improve the ailing state of our government.
With the present situation here in the CNMI, we cannot help these children because we would be creating bigger problem for our Commonwealth. First, we need to strengthen ourselves as a people; before we can help anybody—or else, we all fall!
