In an effort to beat the Commonwealth’s clock, the Northern Mariana Islands Triathlon Federation has scheduled the second qualifying race for the team that will represent the three islands in the three-sport event during the 2006 Micronesian Games this summer.

As with many of the multisport races held on Saipan, the local triathletes will have the opportunity to cross the finish line in front of their home town fans, but this summer they will do so after racing alongside some of the Pacific’s finest.

The chance to join Team Pepsi continues bright and early on Saturday, Jan. 14, at Pau Pau Beach, as triathletes tackle the 1.5-kilometer swim, 40-km bike, and 10-km run legs of the Olympic-distance course. Registration begins at 5:45am, with the race getting underway when the swim kicks off at 6:30am.

Aside from allowing only Micronesian hopefuls, the NMITF has opened up the race to teams and individuals looking for a test of their fitness and mental toughness. Race coordinator Sue Knecht said that teams are encouraged, and that lone racers can use the event as a stepping stone for the XTERRA Saipan Championship and the Tagaman Triathlon in April.

While the NMITF has already completed the first round of the Enticer Series, the adrenaline junkies are going to offer it again later this month. The opportunity for first timers to get ready for competing in either of the April races is still a possibility, but the time to start swimming, cycling, and running is now.

Those continuing along the multisport path for the first time also stand to gain from throwing their hat into the ring for the event as the NMITF will recognize the most improved rookie award at the end of March.
