‘It’s still Babauta’s show until Jan. 8’
Thus said House leadership spokesperson Charles Reyes Jr. to a Northern Marianas College student who called Speaker and Gov.-elect Benigno R. Fitial’s office to express concern about her scholarship money.
The student, according to Reyes, was concerned about not having the scholarship money in time for the payment of her tuition and other educational expenses.
Registration for the Spring 2006 semester will start today, Jan. 4, and will run through Jan. 14.
The CNMI Scholarship Office reportedly does not have an administrator at present. Meliza Guajardo, the former administrator, has reportedly vacated her post.
The Saipan Tribune tried but failed to confirm if an acting administrator has been designated for the agency.
“[The student] is very concerned. I’m really sorry because the governor-elect has to be sworn-in to do anything. He cannot go directly to an agency because it is not within his jurisdiction,” Reyes said.
“It’s still Babauta’s show until Monday. Whatever problems may come [concerning the Executive Branch], we are not in the position to do anything,” he added.
Besides Guajardo, the Scholarship Office had only three staff members, including two administrative assistants and a liaison officer designated by the Governor’s Office.
The Scholarship Office is controlled by the six-member Scholarship Advisory Board, headed by chairwoman Margarita Diaz-Tudela and vice chairwoman Catherine Sablan. The board members are Rufina Miles, Antonio Santos, Aniceto Mundo, and Sabina San Nicolas.
