The Department of Public Safety as of yesterday remained mum about the reported break-in at the CNMI Treasury’s main offices in Capitol Hill where 195 government blank checks were stolen.

Acting DPS spokesman Eric David said he could not release any details about the burglary because the officer in charge has yet to finish his the police report in the case.

David said he is also not aware if arrests were already made as of yesterday afternoon.

The spokesman said an officer has three working days to complete his or her report.

David said he is hoping that by today, the third day, the officer-in-charge could finish the report.

Capt. Lawrence Camacho, chief of the DPS Criminal Investigation Bureau, when contacted yesterday only stated that the “investigation is ongoing.”

Finance Secretary Fermin Atalig on Wednesday told reporters that the Treasury’s main offices were burglarized and that blank government checks intended for the issuance of payroll and tax rebates were stolen.

Atalig alerted the Bank of Guam and other CNMI banks to prevent the drawdown of funds from the stolen checks.
