More students who are taking diverse courses here and off-island can now apply for help from the Saipan Higher Education Financial Assistance office.

This after the Attorney General’s Office signed and approved last month the amendment for SHEFA regulations that now allow the scholarship office to accept applications for scholarship of students pursuing courses other than the previous requirements.

“The rules and regulations [now] expand the list of fields of study that are deemed priorities for Saipan for purposes of awarding the priority field of study supplementary financial assistance for qualified residents of Saipan pursuing post secondary education on Saipan or abroad at U.S. accredited institutions of higher learning,” the amendment noted.

Students who plan to enroll and are enrolled in the following courses could now be accepted for scholarship grants: Anthropology and Sociology for Teaching, Biology for Teaching, Criminal Justice leading to Forensic Science, Lab Technology, Psychology other than leading to Counseling, and Human Resources Development and Personnel Management.

Other courses now included in the eligibility for scholarships are Social Fields courses such as Psychiatry and Environmental Studies and Conservation. This includes studies on Natural Resources, Volcanology, Marine Biology, Fish and Wildlife, Meteorology and Archaeology.

Computer Graphics courses including technical or specialized trades like journalism, management information, computer programming, and other fields of study sanctioned by the board in accordance with the administrative procedures act, are also now integrated with the requirements for scholarship availability.
