Christmas Island Relay nears
The Northern Marianas Athletics confirmed yesterday that it will host the 24th Annual Christmas Island Relay on Dec. 31.
NMA coaches director Elias Rangamar said that the 2005 edition will begin at 5:30am at the Pacific Islands Club parking lot and will end at the Last Command Post in Marpi.
Rangamar also disclosed that the event may also be used as a venue for athletes to prep for next month’s first-ever Saipan Marathon, as well as the annual half marathon and 10-kilometer run that coincide with the inaugural event.
Registration for the 13.7-mile course begins at 5am at the start area.
Each team, which consists of five members, must switch runners every mile. It is also required that each team has at least one female participant or a participant who is under the age of 16 or in the senior division. Prior to competing, all teams must pay a fee of $25.
Each team must also have a transportation vehicle that will be used to transport runners to their posts.
Individuals determined to run the course as a soloist can do so at a fee of $10.
Last year’s event was topped by Kieren’s Going Down after the team completed the course in 1:25.40. The team was comprised of Russ Quinn, Nate Hawley, Stephan Samoyloff, Akiko Hagiwara, and Blaine Rodgers.
Taking second place was Kieran Went Down after clocking in at 1:28.04. Kieran Daly, Yosh Gabaldon, Chris Fryling, Meiko Motoyoshi, and Shawna Ping made the push for the team.
Ketson Kabiriel, Robin Sapong, Lia Rangamar, Reylynn Sapong, and Bo Wang of the Saipan Athletic Club took third in 1:36.26.
A total of 11 teams took part in the event.
