Marianas High School seniors trooped to the parking lot of the Coca-Cola Beverage (Micronesia), Inc. last Saturday for an early morning carwash fundraising drive.

The students, clad in their most comfortable carwash clothes, were all smiles as they washed, dried, waxed, and wiped the giant delivery trucks of the softdrink company.

Led by MHS teacher Cherlyn Cabrera, the students showed their appreciation to the assistance extended by the softdrink maker by washing the trucks and vans.

Cabrera said the students were just repaying the kindness of the company, which has been extending financial assistance not only to MHS but also to other schools in the Commonwealth.

She said the carwash was part of the students’ fundraising activity for their planned sojourn to Japan. The students will be involved in an exchange program in Yokohama and Hokkaido, Japan. The students are set to visit the Land of the Rising Sun in January.

“The kids call the group the ‘Ski Club,’” she said, adding that the high school students thought about calling themselves as such because they are also excited to try their hand in skiing in Hokkaido.

Group spokesperson Coral Wonenberg said they are raising funds for the ski trip. “We are going to Japan for 10 days and live with our host families for a cultural exchange,” she said. She said the group is very grateful to Coca-Cola for giving them an additional $300 for their trip.

Coca-Cola’s sales and marketing director Kathryn H. Barry said she appreciated the gesture of the students in cleaning their vehicles. She said the students need assistance and this was one way of helping the community.

Barry also gave the students Coca-Cola calendars and T-shirts for souvenirs.
