With husband Percy by her side, Gloria Omechelang finally bagged her first Pepsi Queen of the Lanes Tenpin Bowling Tournament with solid performance in the December session.

After starting off with pedestrian scores on Sunday, Omechelang found her groove and kept a firm grip on it until closing her evening at the Saipan Bowling Center with a total of 774 pins.

The PTI employee got her campaign going with a 173 and 161 in her first two games, but with support from Percy pouring in, managed to heat up and burn the lane for 224 pins in her third game to jump back into solid position.

With momentum, Omechelang kept the heat on and sizzled by bruising another 216 pins in her final game for an average of 193.5 pins per outing.

“This is the first time I win the Queen of the Lanes and it feels great because I’ve been trying for a year,” the December crowned champion said. “My husband learns from outside and teaches me…he gives me pointers every time, and when I saw my score, I had a good feeling that I would win.”

Omechelang’s feeling was right as she didn’t have to bowl on Monday.

When asked what he told her while she was trying to beat up the pins, Percy simply stated that he stressed the importance for her to “focus on her throw and not change her throw and she’ll get it.”

Meanwhile, Rita Palacios finished in second place with 727 pins for an average of 181.75 pins per game. She knocked down 186 pins in her opening game, followed with a 180, and posted a 169 in her third game before closing on a high note with 192 pins.

For her part, Ron Cal’s Sunday performance was good for third place as she finished with 703 pins. She posted scores of 166 and 164 before breaking over the 200-mark with 202 pins in the third game. She then finished off with 171 pins for an average of 175.75 pins per game.

With the win, Omechelang earned $50 while Palacios and Cal took home $30 and $20.

The monthly bowling competition is sponsored by Pacific Trading Co. and organized by the Saipan Bowling Association. It culminates with a championship tournament next month, with all monthly 2005 winners battling for supremacy.
