It was an interesting evening for the Son family Monday night in the 3rd Annual Taga Tennis Tournament, with brothers Nicolas and Daniel moving forward in the men’s doubles, and mother Young advancing in the women’s action at the American Memorial Park tennis courts.

The Son brothers played well in their semifinal bout and earned a ticket to the 4.5 title match after turning back a determined effort by rising star Ji Hoon Heo and Lito Cabrera in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.

The Son brothers will go up against Nanding Cajigan and Dr. Alberto Ventura, who were pushed to the limit but still came out on top against Hector Benitez and Renato Espanola 1-6, 6-3, and 7-6 (7-4).

For her part, Young Son and female standout Mayuko Arriola continue to work well together as the combo cruised to a 6-1 first set victory over young talents Vivian Lee and Audrey Motto, before pushing the right buttons for a second set clincher, 7-6 (6-3) in the women’s open.

Joining Son and Arriola in the finals are Lucita Pasana and Clefoe Santos, who defeated Sally Wong and Delia Johnson in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.

Meanwhile, Buddy Garote and Richard Asuncion stopped John Wayne Kintaro and Toshi Beltau 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, while Boyet Minor and Roy Pangelinan breezed past Chuck Sayon and Edwin Maratas 6-3, 6-4.

Also finding success in the men’s 4.0 were Feel Kalen and Asuncion, who survived a tough challenge from Reo Arriola and Tony Santos for a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) victory.

Other results include Ed Casing and Jaime Halgos beating Bobby Nato and Romy Espeleta in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 and George Lizardo and Diony Peralta stopping Larry Fortes and Ralph Alvarado 6-2, 6-4.

The tournament is sponsored by Pepsi and Miller Lite, as well as Telesource CNMI, and is hosted by the Saipan Tennis Association.
