Fire victims Salvacion Bery and Marjorie Maglonzo received check donations worth $500 each from the Saipan Rotary Club yesterday during the weekly meeting of the organization at the Hyatt Regency Saipan.

Superior Court associate judge Juan Lizama handed over the check to both victims yesterday. Bery and Maglonzo are both nonresident workers from the Philippines whose house were completely devoured by fire last Nov. 28 in Chalan Kiya.

Maglonzo has been on the island for 15 years and she has been the household help of attorney Joshua Berger’s family for the past four years. She said she is very grateful to the Rotary Club for the generosity and kindness they provide needy people like them.

President Jim Whitt wished the two a happy holiday season despite the circumstance that had beleaguered their lives less than a month before Christmas.

Maglonzo and Bery shared one house. Maglonzo said the fire started from Bery’s side of the house, but soon spread to her side and engulfed and completely burned down their house and every possession they had.

“Our house was completely charred,” she said, adding that they were not able to salvage anything from the house.

Based on the final police report, the fire started around 9:38pm on Nov. 28. The cause of the fire was faulty wiring due to “pirated connection of the wires” that were routed throughout the house. “This in turn, made it very likely for overloading to occur,” said the police report.
